The Kids Are All Right

Rated R 104 minutes 2010

Lisa Cholodenko excels at sophisticated sitcoms, like this zesty and knowing gabfest about what happens to a suburban lesbian couple (Annette Bening, Julianne Moore) when the lusty bachelor “bio-dad” of their teenagers (Mark Ruffalo) shows up and starts winning hearts. Writer-director Cholodenko (Laurel Canyon, High Art) and screenwriting partner Stuart Blumberg have a keen eye for the details of contemporary California life, and the three lead performances take us deep into situational ethics, not only of modern child-raising, but of life itself. With plenty of smart laughs. Bening is especially fine as Nic the sober one, who drives a Volvo wagon and worships Joni Mitchell. Recommended (104 min.).
