The Kid With a Bike

Rated PG-13 87 minutes 2011

The Dardenne Brothers from Belgium, Jean-Pierre and Luc, have made it their mission to present stories of the “left-outs” – accidental parents (The Child), illegal immigrants (Lorna’s Silence), unskilled workers (Rosetta), and juvenile delinquents like the protagonist of this affecting portrait of an unwanted pre-teen boy named Cyril Catoul, played by first-time actor Thomas Doret. The seemingly simple tale of Cyril escaping from a youth home and looking for his wayward father (Dardenne regular Jérémie Renier) opens up into a rich emotional character study when the kid attracts the notice of a hairdresser (Cécile de France) willing to reach out to him and put up with his anger. How the Dardennes accomplish this without syrupy sentimentality is one of the wonders of the world. (87 min.)
