The Jewish Nutcracker

When: Thu., Dec. 16, 7 p.m. and Sun., Dec. 19, 2 & 7 p.m. 2010

Hanukkah came early this year, so the rest of December is all sugarplums, all the time - except for Maccabee: The Jewish Nutcracker … A Hanukkah Story, performed at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco (3200 California St., San Francisco) on Thursday, Dec. 16, and Sunday, Dec. 19. Seeing close parallels between the stories of The Nutcracker and Hanukkah, choreographer Katy Alaniz Rous turned Tchaikovsky's original score into an inclusive multicultural celebration: Rather than Clara, Fritz, and Drosselmeyer, Maccabee follows Judah Maccabee and Miriam as Godfather Maccabee tells them how the Jewish diaspora came to be. And after Miriam dreams about a battle between the Maccabees and the Greek soldiers, Rous calls on her extensive training in international dance styles to complete the tale with Spanish, Arabian, Chinese, and Russian dances - and a visit from the Sufganiyot Fairy. 7 p.m., Sunday also 2 p.m. $25-$60. 415-292-1233 or JCCSF.com
