The Jessica Jones/Angela Wellman Project

When: Wed., July 25, 8 p.m. 2012

Tenor saxophonist Jessica Jones left Berkeley for Brooklyn 15 years ago, but she returns home periodically. Last summer she made a terrific CD of probing Ornette Coleman-flavored free-bop sounds with a quartet co-led by French horn and mellophone blower Mark Taylor at Freight & Salvage. She's currently in the area teaching at the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music, run by trombonist Angela Wellman, with whom she will team up on Wednesday, June 25, at 8 p.m. for a performance at the Freight (2020 Addison St., Berkeley). Jones' liquid-steel tenor and Wellman's deep-toned 'bone suggest sonorities similar to those of the Jones-Taylor combo, but the larger band no doubt has numerous other surprises in store, considering a lineup comprising pianist Kev Choice, bassist Amina Scott, drummer Ayinde Webb, vocalist Lori Wellman, and Juan Medrano Cotito slapping a wooden box-shaped Afro-Peruvian percussion instrument known as a cajón. $20-$22.50.
