The Ides of March

Rated R 100 minutes 2011

A high-class political potboiler with a superb cast is still a potboiler, even when it's co-written and directed by George Clooney. Better to look at this as a keenly entertaining personality parade, with actor Ryan Gosling in the lead role as the press secretary of a liberal Democrat presidential candidate (Clooney) trying to cope with adversity leading up to the Ohio primary. Gosling's cold eyes have never been chillier than as Stephen Myers, the true believer who changes into a shark before our eyes and the eyes of fellow political animals Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Wood, Marisa Tomei, and Jeffrey Wright — all strongly in character. A much lesser work of art is the screenplay by Clooney, Grant Heslov, and Beau Willimon, adapted from Willimon's stage play. The strong cast and Clooney's smarmy-pol barbs notwithstanding, it's a bit of a soap opera. (101 min.)
