The Housemaid

Rated NR 106 minutes 2010

Im Sang Soo’s silky thriller adopts riffs from such classics as Rebecca and La Cérémonie and gives them a sexy South Korean twist, in the tale of a quiet, conscientious young woman named Eun-yi (played by Jeon Do-youn) who unwittingly takes a domestic job in a nest of vipers. Writing and acting are first-rate, with Yun Yeo-jong as the wicked rich family’s faithful, bitter old retainer, and juvenile Ahn Seo-hyeon as the enigmatic little daughter of the household — is she really a bad seed? Adapted by director Im (The President’s Last Bang) and Kim Ki-young from Kim’s 1960 melodrama of the same title, but with added hanky-panky and peek-a-boo violence. Compact and sophisticated. (106 min.)
