The House Jacks

When: Sat., Dec. 10, 8 p.m. 2011

All it takes is a casual YouTube search for "a capella" -- and the ensuing slew of multimillion-view videos -- to see that instrument-free tuneage is making a serious comeback, or maybe it never left. At any rate, the Bay area's own House Jacks have been doing it better and longer than all those smug, be-blazered college kids, having appeared on "Monday Night Football"; at venues like Carnegie Hall and Candlestick Park; and with artists including Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Ray Charles, and -- wait for it -- LL Cool J. On Saturday, Dec. 10, the quintet will be holding its twentieth (!!) anniversary show at Freight & Salvage (2020 Addison St., Berkeley); come armed with outlandish song requests -- the example they give is a "Middle eastern rap mix of 'Like a Virgin'" -- and they'll likely honor them. 8 p.m., $22.50.
