The Hood Internet

When: Tue., Oct. 9, 9 p.m. 2012

Earlier this year, Chicago mashup duo The Hood Internet released its sixth mixtape, featuring a flurry of new tracks, including "Don't Play No Trash," a Beastie Boys/Santigold/Weird Tapes number, and "Five Seconds Don't Care," an odd, breezy mashup of WakaFlocka Flame and Twin Shadow (yes, that's right). Sometimes the mashups are bristly -- the textures or production values of two songs don't quite mesh. But when The Hood Internet hits its stride (it usually does), as with French Montana/Beach House track "Equal Shot," its sound feels good and rich, like crushed velvet, or rainbow-slick, like oil. Children of the digital musicsphere, the pair relishes equally in late-Nineties pop and R&B, as well as modern-day electronic, rap, dubstep, and dreampop, producing an oeuvre that's inventive and party-ready. The Hood Internet performs with Body Language, KID STATIC, and Oscillator at The New Parish (579 18th St., Oakland) on Tuesday, Oct. 9. 9 p.m., $12, $15.
