Sean Penn fires blanks in this trite, clumsily assembled spyboiler about a rogue security op trying to get over his guilty past. As concocted by director Pierre Morel (Taken), screenwriters Pete Travis and Don MacPherson, and novelist Jean-Patrick Manchette, Penn’s Jim Terrier is sorry he assassinated a governmental official in the Congo years ago, so what does he do? He kills twenty or thirty more men who’re trying to force him back into the spook life. Every time Javier Bardem – as Jim’s former buddy – comes onscreen we’re reminded how limited an actor Penn really is. Liam Neeson’s position as chief of the Old Guys Action Movie Society and Fisticuffs Club is secure. Also among the wasted costars are Ray Winstone, Idris Elba, Mark Rylance, and Jasmine Trinca (115 min.).
