The Guard

Rated R 95 minutes 2011

Brendan Gleeson gleefully dominates this likable Irish comedy as Sergeant Gerry Boyle, a corrupt-but-effective rural Garda who teams up with FBI man Don Cheadle to outfox a gang of drug smugglers in contemporary County Galway. The tightly wound, bitingly scripted story is the work of writer-director John Michael McDonagh, brother of playwright-filmmaker Martin McDonagh (In Bruges), with whom JMMcD shares a jaundiced opinion of authority figures as well as a fondness for the biological angle. Cheadle’s part may have been reduced to that of a comic foil, but there’s a double handful of pithy character roles for actors Liam Cunningham, Fionnula Flanagan, Mark Strong, David Wilmot, and young Michael Og Lane as Eugene, the goofy-faced kid who shadows Sergeant Gerry and solves the case ahead of him.
