The Green Hornet 3D

Rated NR 2011

Christoph Waltz makes a fine supervillain at the start of this action comedy, which revives the old 60s TV series with Bruce Lee. But writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg don't give him much to do, focusing instead on tired buddy comedy between the spoiled publishing scion Britt Reid (Rogen) and his not-so-loyal servant, Kato (Jay Chou). The gags turn on the irony that Kato became the cult hero of the series, and Rogen plays the Green Hornet as an enthusiastic buffoon along for the ride; when he starts throwing punches, you can't quite buy it. Michel Gondry (Be Kind Rewind, The Science of Sleep) is an odd choice to direct an action film, and the movie lopes along from one half-baked scene to the next, interrupted on occasion by car-fetish sequences involving the hero's luminous limo the Black Beauty. With Cameron Diaz, Tom Wilkinson, and Edward James Olmos. (119 min.)
