The Great Wave

When: Through Oct. 27

With his own life split between Northern Irish and Japanese ancestry and identity, playwright Francis Turnly dices historical facts with fiction in the third-in-a-trilogy play. The first in the series of plays featuring young Japanese women had schoolgirls caught in an East/West cultural clash; the second, a girl who turns into a cat; and the show at the Rep a moral thriller about teenage sisters on a beach — one of whom is swept away by a storm. During 25 years of search and discovery. Reiko refuses to lose hope that Hanako will be found. In the process, the dark underbelly of Kim il-Sung’s North Korean regime and “comfort women” forced by the Imperial Japanese Army to work as sex slaves boils with contemporary relevance.
