The Grand Budapest Hotel

Rated R 99 minutes 2014

Wes Anderson lays waste to early-20th-century Middle Europe with this capricious, bric-a-brac-filled fantasy built around a resort hotel concierge (Ralph Fiennes, in top form), an oil painting everyone wants, and half the actors in Hollywood. As usual with Anderson the interiors are painstakingly detailed out, but the characters are somehow stronger and more flavorful than usual, beginning with Fiennes’ Monsieur Gustave and continuing with the eccentric denizens of the fictional country of Zubrowka, played by Tony Revolori, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Bill Murray, Saoirse Ronan, Edward Norton, Tom Wilkinson, and many, many more. It all adds up to one of Anderson’s most appealing curios. Just don’t squint too hard at the screenplay. Written by Anderson and Hugo Guinness (100 min.).
