The Garden

Rated NR 80 minutes 2009

The deeper we go into the dispute over the plot of land in South Central Los Angeles, the more tangled the story — but that’s the way it is in documentaryville. An organized group of mostly Mexican-American urban farmers have been growing fruit and vegetables on the green city block as the film opens in 2003, and filmmaker Scott Hamilton Kennedy follows the bouncing politicos (including LA mayor Villaraigosa), crusading celebrities, and anguished community leaders as the land-use clash escalates. Further proof, if any is needed, that private property is the sacrosanct cornerstone of American life, for better or worse. Written and directed by Kennedy (OT: Our Town) (80 min.).
