Brothers Brad and John Hennegan track six thoroughbreds in the qualifying races running up to the 2006 Kentucky Derby, yet the horseflesh isnt as interesting to them as the owners and trainers, an odd assortment of money men and equine gurus with a culture all their own. Among those profiled in this video documentary are Frank Amonte, a jittery New Yawker who gets a big promotion to head trainer for Achilles of Troy; Dan Hendricks, who was left paraplegic by a fall from a horse and now monitors Brother Derek from a wheelchair; and Kiaran McLaughlin, who has multiple sclerosis and trains Jazil for Sheikh Hamdan, Dubais minister of finance and industry. The video is dully and cheaply shot, but the Henegans are lifelong racing fans with family ties to the sport, and their infatuation with the Derby is infectious (97 min.).
