The Edge of Heaven

Rated NR 2008

The intersecting lives of a group of contemporary Germans and Turks moving back and forth between the two countries give filmmaker Fatih Akin plenty to mess around with in this delicately poised social drama, which begins when an old Turkish man and his assimilated son get involved with a prostitute in Bremen. Despite writer-director Akin’s dubious tactic of having the characters continually pass each other unbeknownst in the street, there’s a thoughtful payoff in the relationship between two women — a naïve German student named Lotte and a Turkish revolutionary named Ayten. With Nurgül Yesilçay, Patrycia Ziolkowska, and Baki Davrak (116 min.).
