The Dillards

When: Wed., Feb. 25, 8 p.m. 2009

The Dillards were one of the first hardcore bluegrass groups to break into the mainstream, popularizing the style during the folk revival of the early-'60s, the progressive "new-grass" movement of the '70s, and their appearances as the Darling Bluegrass Band on the Andy Griffith Show. Doug Dillard's fast-as-light banjo-picking and Rodney Dillard's equally impressive flat-picking won over folk audiences without alienating longtime bluegrass fanatics. They experimented with a bluegrass/rock hybrid in the '70s, but returned to traditional acoustic music after reuniting in the '90s. Rod and Doug still amaze folks with their pickin' and high harmonies. They tour infrequently, so you won't want to miss this show. At the Freight & Salvage (1111 Addison St., Berkeley) on Wednesday, Feb. 25. 9:30 p.m., $18.50, $19.50. TheFreight.org
