The Debt

Rated R 112 minutes 2011

Regular spy drama could have been a lot better. Two more or less capable trios of actors portray a team of Israeli Mossad agents on the trail of a Nazi war criminal doctor — Jessica Chastain, Marton Csokas, and Sam Worthington in East Berlin in 1965 and Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson, and Ciarán Hinds as the same characters in 1997. But director John Madden’s dull, obvious style of movie-making robs the would-be thriller of most of its procedural excitement and we’re left with the warmed-over love story between the Mirren and Hinds characters. The screenplay, by Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman, and Peter Straughan (adapted from Assaf Bernstein’s 2007 film), isn’t too enthralling to begin with. Everyone involved should have been forced to watch Munich until the lesson sank in. Somewhat of a stiff. (114 min.)
