The Day the Earth Stood Still

Rated G 92 minutes 1951

Earthlings are still just as ignorant and violent as they were in 1951, so when soft-spoken space invader Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) and his indestructible giant robot revisit our sphere in this borderline intelligent remake, they’ve got pretty much the same job to do: find a reason not to destroy it. That’s where motherly scientist Jennifer Connelly and her adopted son Jaden Smith (son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett) come in. The plague-of-metallic-locusts effect and various barrages may be worth a look-see from sci-fans; others might enjoy John Cleese as a sympathetic physicist. If the procedural plot points don’t exactly add up, don’t worry — it’s not the end of the world. Directed by Scott Derrickson from a screenplay by David Scarpa, adapted from Edmund H. North’s original screenplay (103 min.).
