When: Sun., Feb. 17, 4:30 p.m. 2008

The Bay Area's leading Afro-Cuban jazz musician and educator, John Santos presents two events exploring "The Danzón: Cuban Musical Royalty -- Jazz Predecessor," at the Jazzschool (2087 Addison St., Berkeley). On Saturday, Feb. 16, Santos and his quintet use musical examples in a lecture-clinic on the Cuban danzón, and how it has influenced American music from salsa to jazz (8 p.m., $10). On Sunday, Feb. 17, the quintet and guests perform a concert of Cuban classics and band originals (4:30 p.m., $10). Along with Santos on vocals and percussion (congas, maracas, chekere), the group includes Orestes Vilató on timbales and bongos, pianist Marco Diaz, flutist-percussionist John Calloway, and bassist Saul Sierra.
