The Cuban Cowboys

When: Thu., April 22, 8 p.m. 2010

ChichaLibre'sgoofy beats are guaranteed to make you wave your hands in the air like you just don't care. Chicha was created in the Sixties when the Indians of the Peruvian Amazon blended cumbia with American surf music and their own traditional rhythms. Olivier Conan, owner Brooklyn's Barbés nightclub, discovered the music on a 2005 trip to Peru and got together with a few friends as ChichaLibre to play music based on this new/old sound. The chicha groove is as flexible as reggae; ChichaLibre's skewed rhythms sound oddly familiar, halfway between spaghetti western twang and psychedelic Amazon grunge.ChichaLibre plays Thursday, Apr. 22, at the Rickshaw Stop (155 Fell St., San Francisco). 8 p.m., $10, $12.
