What, another Holocaust film? Relax. This Austrian-German production has such a good story, the oversold genre doesnt matter. Master counterfeiter Salomon Sally Sorowitsch (played by tough-faced actor Karl Markovics) gets swept up in a Berlin police raid and lands in a succession of Nazi concentration camps, where he uses his wits and his engraving skills to avoid the ovens. Writer-director Stefan Ruzowitzky takes care to show that the class struggles among the Jewish prisoners was just as pervasive as the brutality of the SS guards and their crooked commandant, who uses Sally and his mates to produce phony British pound notes and US dollars. Irony galore (98 min.).
