The Conquest

Rated NR 105 minutes 2011

How much do we really need to know about the political career of French president Nicolas Sarkozy? That’s the question we ask ourselves as filmmaker Xavier Durringer’s straightforward historical drama plays out, with actor Denis Podalydès as the less-than-charming conservative opportunist who willed his way to France’s top job despite the misgivings of rivals in his own party. The film is too concerned with political intrigue to function as much of a general-interest story, yet a bit too soapy – Sarko’s on-again off-again wife Cécilia (Florence Pernel) is seen a catalyst – to work as a behind-the-scenes policy exposé. Maybe a documentary would have done the job better. Screenplay adaptation by director Durringer, with dialogue by Patrick Rotman. (105 min.)
