When: Thu., March 5, 8 p.m. 2015
It’s easy to forget that The Classical — whose late 2014 album, Diptych, figured prominently in the Express’ year-end music coverage — is just a duo, with Britt Ciampa on drums and Juliet Gordon controlling the many carefully arranged midi-samples on a computer. The sight of the two live, with just Ciampa’s trap kit and Gordon clutching a microphone, appears to conflict with the massive, multi-faceted arrangements on Diptych, but it lends itself to Gordon’s strength as a performer. The palpably dramatic gestures on Diptych are illustrated, heightened, and lent further tension by Gordon’s stage presence, live instruments or not. On Thursday at the Stork Club (2330 Telegraph Ave., Oakland), The Classical returns from a tour of the Pacific Northwest to perform with Be Quiet, Wicked Man, and Perhapsy.
