The Business of Being Born

When: Sun., Jan. 6, 7 p.m. 2008

Following in the footsteps of EastBay muckraker Jessica Mitford -- who exposed profligate practices of the funeral industry in her exhaustive 1963 book, The American Way of Death -- filmmaker Abby Epstein casts a skeptical eye on the birthing industry in her new documentary, The Business of Being Born. Made in collaboration with former talk show host and Hairspray actress RickiLake, the film discusses such dicey issues as hospital epidurals and the increasingly high-tech nature of maternity care, as Epstein turns the camera on her own pregnancy. It screens Sunday, Jan. 6, at La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley). 7 p.m., $10-$20. LaPena.org
