Jodie Foster turns in one of her strongest performances in, of all things, the previously mostly-masculine urban-revenge genre -- as a radio talk-show host who loses her boyfriend, her comfortable sense of well-being, and her resistance to lethal force after being wilded by street thugs and turning to a 9mm automatic for solace. Complicating her already cloudy life is the NYPD detective on her trail (the always-reliable Terrence Howard), whose motives are ultimately just as questionable as those of the avenging angel herself. It helps this pulpy story immeasurably to have director Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, The Butcher Boy) at the helm. He has a gift for coaxing out the lovable side of psychopaths, of which this genre shocker has a surfeit. Naveen Andrews, Mary Steenburgen, and Nicky Katt costar. Screenplay by Roderick Taylor, Bruce A. Taylor, and Cynthia Mort.
