The Bourne Ultimatum

Rated PG-13 111 minutes 2007

The thrilling final installment of the slam-bam-violent trilogy adapted from author Robert Ludlum's '80s-era spy novels continues where The Bourne Supremacy left off, with amnesiac American "rogue asset" Jason Bourne (Matt Damon, never better) pursuing vengeance on his naughty CIA handlers by dashing out the brains of a succession of assassins in picturesque places (Moscow, Madrid, Tangier, New York), while the real culprits (David Strathairn, Albert Finney, Scott Glenn, and Joan Allen) await their turn. Procedurally, director Paul Greengrass' second Bourne adventure is much like any other spy pic. The distinguishing ingredient is Greengrass' (United 93) implied critique of speeded-up 21st-century life. Bourne, the ultimate disgruntled employee, wants off the treadmill, so he keeps turning it faster. Who hasn't dreamed of killing his boss? Writers Tony Gilroy, Scott Z. Burns, and George Nolfi adapted Ludlum's book for the screen.
