The Black Swans

When: Tue., Jan. 24, 9 p.m. 2012

Until I found their Tumblr blog, I was tempted to send a cease-and-desist letter to The Black Swans for lowering my Google ranking. Turns out the Ohio-based folk outfit is pretty fantastic, with its richly orchestrated arrangements and utterly self-deprecating lyrics -- the song "I.D.W.2F.," from the band's sensitive-guy Sex Brain EP, opens with the lyric I don't want to fuck, I just want to spoon. The Black Swans have a copious discography that's alternately earned them "really good" and "really bad" reviews. Judging from Jerry DeCicca's delicate, barely whispered baritone vocals, you get the feeling those bad reviews must have shattered him. The Black Swans play The Stork Club (2330 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Tuesday, Jan. 24, with a lineup of like-minded indie folk bands and yearning singer-songwriters. Among them: Brooklyn outfit The Fishermen Three, Lauren Norton and the Souterrain, Will Sprott, and Odawas. 9 p.m., $5. StorkClubOakland.com
