The Big Sick

Rated R 120 minutes 2017

Cute couple, cute writing, cute movie in the story of a Pakistani-American standup comic (Kumail Nanjiani) going to great lengths to avoid telling his ver-rry conservative old-country parents that he’s in love with a young, white, non-Muslim woman (Zoe Kazan) in contempo Chicago – even when she suddenly falls desperately ill. Nanjiani and writer-producer Emily V. Gordon cooked up the scenario from their own experiences, and if it closely resembles many another cross-cultural rom-com, the actors’ personalities give it the ring of truth. Kudos all around: to Nanjiani, Kazan, Gordon, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano (these two as her worried parents), Kurt Braunohler (as Kumail’s flummoxed roomie), director Michael Showalter, and comedy swami Judd Apatow, who co-produced (119 min., 2017, rated R) (K.V.)
