The 802 Tour

When: Mon., Aug. 18, 7:30 p.m. 2008

Sam Amidon plays with a variety of musicians, including his co-headliners Doveman and composer NicoMuhly, but it's his own work as a folk singer that's most impressive. He takes traditional songs, usually from the Appalachians, and sings them in a way that's true to their homemade roots while giving them a contemporary spin that's making them come alive for a new generation of listeners. On his recent album All Is Well, his untrained, weary warble is complemented by electronic textures that add a touch of mystery to old chestnuts. What he'll do to them in person is the question, but he's adept on guitar, fiddle, and banjo, so they'll probably sound a bit more traditional than they do on the CD. Sam Amidon plays on Monday, August 18 at the Swedish American Hall (2174 Market St., San Francisco). 7:30 p.m. $18, $20.
