Of all the Bay Area-born music genres to have succumbed to the fickle forces of the industry, thrash appears to be enjoying a unique, genuine resurgence. Metallica's most recent effort Death Magnet harks back to the band's heavier, faster roots, and most of the original members of Testament ended the band's nine-year hiatus to release The Formation of Damnation earlier this year -- which landed on the Billboard Top 200, earned the most spins on metal radio in 2008, and launched them on a worldwide tour. With the Pound long gone, Fat City has become the requisite metal venue, where Testament will play on New Year's Eve, along with related side bands Dublin Death Patrol and Dragonlord (guitarist Eric Peterson's black metal outfit) and LaazRockit (another old-school Bay Area thrash band recently resurrected).
