Rated R 105 minutes 2011

Obese high-school outcast and his misfit friends navigate adolescence with the help of tough-but-fair assistant principal. Stop me if you’ve heard this one. To their credit, writer-director Azazel Jacobs and co-scenarist Patrick Dewitt take the high road through Terri’s (Jacob Wysocki) vale of tears, and John C. Reilly is dependably earthy as Mr. Fitzgerald – but the ultra-familiar story suffers from lack of proper follow-through. If it’s any consolation, juvie actor Bridger Zadina steals the movie as Terri, the bitter little squirt whose trademark tic is tearing his hair out. If nothing else, this makes us appreciate John Hughes and Gus Van Sant (105 min.)
