Tendai Symposium

The Tendai branch of Buddhism was brought in the 8th century from China to Japan, where it flourished. An all-day Tendai Symposium at the Institute of East Asian Studies (2223 Fulton St., Berkeley) on Friday, Apr. 23, features clergy and scholars from all over the world discussing sutras, Tendai monkhood, Tendai calligraphy, Tendai's relationship with Shinto, and other topics. 9 a.m.-6 p.m., free.
