Tamara Drewe

Rated R 110 minutes 2010

Writers in heat in the English countryside. Author Posy Simmonds’ graphic novel update of Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd gets fleshed out winningly by director Stephen Frears as a sexy, good-natured, yet slightly sinister comedy of 21st-century manners. The return of the title babe (Gemma Arterton) to her home village in Dorset causes a stir in a rural writer’s retreat, especially when Tamara brings home a London rock star (Dominic Cooper) and a pair of randy local teenage girls take notice. Numerous fine character parts: Roger Allam as a horny best-selling author; Tamsin Greig as his wife, proprietor of the retreat; Bill Camp as a roly-poly academic; Luke Evans as Tamara’s old boyfriend, the village handyman; and Jessica Barden as Jody, the fangirl fulcrum of the action. Frears (The Queen, Dirty Pretty Things) has an eye and an ear for light-hearted social commentary, and his adaptation (with Moira Buffini) of Simmonds’ work captures all the flavors. (111 min.)
