Blues, Folk, & Country

Taj Mahal

When: Fri., March 25, 8:30 p.m. 2011

To call TajMahal a bluesman is really an oversimplification and a disservice to the man's musical skills. Try "musicologist" instead. Mahal's gritty vocals and multi-dimensional grasp of genres like reggae, Caribbean folk, jazz, gospel, R&B, West African, and Hawaiian music has found him collaborating with a who's who of talent, including ex-Rising SonsbandmateRyCooder, Ali FarkaToure, Bonnie Raitt, Ziggy Marley, and Captain Beefheart. And while 2008's Maestro is his most recent studio outing (and first domestically released effort in five years), the multi-instrumentalist has continued down the same eclectic path by collaborating with a wide range of guests, including Ben Harper, Angelique Kidjo, and Los Lobos. The former animal husbandry major will be sharing his inner musical polyglot onFriday, Mar. 25 at The Independent (628 Divisadero, San Francisco). 9 p.m., $37.50. TheIndependentSF.com
