Stacy Tang has brought a bit of bian dang (Taiwanese lunch box) culture to the heart of Uptown Oakland, where there aren’t many places you can grab a quick, filling lunch for about $10. Taiwan Bento aims to fill that niche. Lunch box options include braised pork (diced pork belly and ground pork cooked slowly until they form a rich, gelatinous meat sauce) and sesame-oil-marinated roasted chicken thighs, both served with Taiwanese “kimchi,” edamame, a tea egg, and plenty of white rice. Noodle lovers can go for a hearty bowl of Taiwanese beef noodle soup or zhajiangmian — Taiwan’s answer to Italian bolognese. Wash it all down with the caramel-y house-made winter melon drink.
