Swiss Army Man

Rated R 95 minutes 2016

Is this two-character story of a “lost” man (Paul Dano) interacting with his “dead” alter ego (Daniel Radcliffe) an interesting exercise in absurdism, or just more hipster-bait deadpan mumblecore noodling by a pair of music-video makers? We vote for the latter. The dead giveaway is the movie’s fondness for farts – many, many eruptions of flatulence -- combined with Hank (Dano) and Manny’s (Radcliffe) therapeutic role-playing in the woods and the chickenshit feel-good ending. Filmmakers Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, aka The Dans, see to it that their feature debut is more fascinating to pick apart than to actually watch, although we really shouldn’t waste much time on this one in any case (95 min.) (K.V.)
