Rated R 152 minutes 2018

For his remake of/tribute to Dario Argento’s influential 1977 horror pic of the same name, director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name) kicks out all the jams. A genuine mindbender, Guadagnino’s version takes the basic premise – strange happenings at a German ballet academy, revolving around a new student – and gives the grotesquery knob a powerful twist. Starring a fine Dakota Johnson as the new ballerina and the always provocative Tilda Swinton in three separate roles, with supple support by Chloë Grace Moretz and Mia Goth, this is a psychological melodrama in every sense of the word. Also with Angela Winkler, Ingrid Caven, Renée Soutendijk, Sylvie Testud, and Jessica Harper – Argento’s original leading lady – in an important cameo. Screenplay adaptation by American writer David Kajganich. A helter-skelter dance of death, the stuff that nightmares are made of (152 min., 2018, rated R)
