Susana Baca is responsible for introducing Afro-Peruvian music to audiences in the United States. Afro-Peruvian songs incorporate African and indigenous Andean music and was long considered déclassé by the Peruvian upper class, but Baca's low soulful alto and wrenching emotional delivery and the solid Afro-Peruvian groove laid down by her backing musicians have made her one of the most compelling artists in the world music field. Although strongly based in the Afro-Peruvian tradition, Baca has incorporated elements of jazz, Cuban, and Brazilian music into her sound and often melds traditional melodies with the words of poets like Federico García Lorca and Peru's ChabucaGranda.
Susana Baca plays Wednesday, Apr. 14, 8 p.m.; and Thursday, Apr. 15, 8 & 10 p.m.; at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero, Oakland). $22.Yoshis.com
