Super Cassette

When: Fri., March 15, 9 p.m. 2019

Super Cassette has vocal harmonies so smooth you would think its members indistinguishable. That's because they are, sort of. One half of the band, and the main artistic collaboration behind the music, consists of identical twins Max and Nick Gerlock. The group describes itself as "JPEG-artifacted garage pop" and its members have the backgrounds to back up the statement; the brothers Gerlock assembled the original group from the co-op scene at UC Berkeley while all four members were earning STEM degrees. After graduation, it released Cathode Ray Tube, on which Gerlock's breezy vocal delivery and jangly, pop rock guitar riffs offer a satisfying contrast to the heft of lyrical themes ranging from modern alienation to long-distance love. Production-enhanced arpeggios a la Radiohead and Animal Collective offer a Space Age carousel of texture on the EP' s final tracks, leaving the listener with the option to dance or lay down, supine, eyes pitching with the clouds.
