Super 8: The IMAX Experience

Rated PG-13 112 minutes 2011

No wonder Steven Spielberg liked this story. Only in the Spielbergian world-view would the invasion of a small town by a monstrous outer-space alien escaped from the clutches of the US Air Force serve as a backdrop to the coming-of-age story of a preteen boy (Joel Courtney), a preteen girl (Elle Fanning), and their friends who live to make movies. Zombie movies, natch. And no wonder it’s set in 1979 — in many ways writer-director J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi redux is a nostalgic distillation of the glory days of E.T., Poltergeist, Gremlins, WarGames, etc. Who wants to relive the Reagan years? The young romance is the best thing about this dated, overlabored, ultimately lightweight special-effects bargain barn, made by Amblin with the Master himself as a producer. Also with Kyle Chandler, Riley Griffiths, and Glynn Turman. (112 min.)
