Sunshine Cleaning

Rated R 102 minutes 2009

Chick-flick veterans Amy Adams and Emily Blunt act their fool heads off as two out-of-luck, lower-middle-class sisters from Albuquerque who decide the post-mortem “crime scene cleanup” business might be their springboard to regular income. Sounds like a recipe for a female Dumb and Dumber, but the Lorkowski girls are anything but stupid — just a little overloaded with emotional baggage. Director Christine Jeffs (Sylvia) and rookie screenwriter Megan Holley earn their laughs and the requisite dollop of pathos honestly. It helps that the sisters’ eccentric father is played by Alan Arkin, lending his “sunshine” to yet another quirky, dysfunctional family. Also with Steve Zahn as an adulterous cop, Jason Spevack as the Adams character’s young son, and Clifton Collins as a sympathetic store owner. Another “recession special” (102 min.).
