Sunn O)))

When: Sat., Aug. 8, 9 p.m. 2009

There's an unexpected phenomenon that can happen at a metal show. After an hour or so of utter violence emanating from the amp stack, the constant barrage establishes an equilibrium from which arises a strange tranquility. And it's in this state that Sunn O))) lives year-round. Formed in Seattle in the late 1990s by Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley -- who also founded the now-revered Southern Lord label -- the band plays sloth-paced, droning, drop-tuned, distortion-laden clouds of noise (mostly via guitar and bass) as thick as the fog in which it plays. It's theatrical (they wear hooded robes), over the top, and so loud it'll leave your innards reverberating for days. For connoisseurs of doom, however, it's bliss. Sunn O))) stops by the Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco) on Saturday, Aug. 8, in support of its latest release Monoliths & Dimensions. The Accused opens. 9 p.m., $16, $18.
