Summer Concerts in the Redwood Grove

When: Thu., Aug. 30, 5:30-7:30 p.m. 2012

As frontman of The Mumlers, local singer-songwriter Will Sprott channels a folkie, rock ’n’ roll sentiment that’s steeped in retro country and soul, without sounding like a blatant rip-off. The explanation? For Sprott, this feeling seems to come entirely naturally. And when he performs solo with his acoustic guitar, his folksiness comes to the fore, resulting in something surprisingly lovely — and distinct, which is notable, considering the plethora of singer-songwriters trying to seemingly do the same thing. He’s got “it,” whatever “it” is, and he’s the perfect person to have on the closing bill, along with alterna-country singer Paula Frazer, of the Summer Concerts in the Redwood Grove at the UC Botanical Garden (200 Centennial Dr., Berkeley), a family-friendly concert series located in a ridiculously picturesque setting. Bring a picnic, arrive early, and don’t forget a blanket. 5:30-7:30 p.m., $12, $10 for members, $5 for youth, free for kids under five. BotanicalGarden.Berkeley.edu
