Sugar & Gold

When: Fri., Feb. 8, 9 p.m. 2008

They could pass easily pass for nothing more than San Francisco hipsters, bent on running irony into the ground and content to get their friends dancing while everyone else applauds yet steers clear. Playing electro-funk flavored with throwback disco and white-boy soul will do that, especially when you hang with the indie-rock crowd. Frontman Philipp Minnig goes so far as to sport a gimmicky captain's hat like Captain and Tennille's Daryl Dragon. But there's more to Sugar and Gold than style and shock value: namely the music, which contrary to expectations is totally legit. The sextet's 2007 debut, Crème, overcomes a few duds to split the difference between twentysomething allure and Baby Boomer nostalgia, and live the band could fit as comfortably at a wedding as at a club. Sugar and Gold plays the Uptown (1928 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Friday, Feb. 8 with support from Oakland acts HOTTUB and Somehow at Sea. 9 p.m., $8.
