A gay man named Franck (Pierre Deladonchamps) meets and becomes fascinated with an attractive stranger named Michel (Christophe Paou) at a secluded lakeside cruising spot in the hills of Alpes Maritimes in Southeast France, but there is something troubling about Franck’s new lover. In the hands of writer-director Alain Guiraudie this slender outline assumes towering, ominous dimensions reminiscent of the work of Patricia Highsmith. Further, the filmmaker uses a few well chosen graphic sex scenes to move the plot forward. With those ingredients plus extremely spare dialogue and the whispering of breeze in the pine trees, filmmaker Guiraudie achieves the heights of suspense. A rare and enthralling experience, for open-minded adults only (100 min.).
