Hannah Maynard (Kerry Fox), the UN war crimes prosecutor trying to convict a Bosnian Serb general on charges of genocide left over from the 1990s civil war in Sarajevo, runs into moral and theoretical roadblocks as well as procedural ones in this sly, understated drama by director Hans-Christian Schmid. The chief witness (Anamaria Marinca) fears Serbian retaliation and meanwhile Hannah’s boss in The Hague (Stephen Dillane) just wants to get the whole process over with as soon as possible. Schmid and screenwriter Bernd Lange seem to be making a point about the dubious foundation underlying the European Union. Nice work by New Zealand actor Fox (An Angel at My Table) and Romania’s Marinca (105 min.).
