Stone's Throw Showcase

When: Fri., April 20, 10 p.m. 2012

If you don't make it to see Wiz Khalifa this 4/20 weekend, San Jose-raised producer Peanut Butter Wolf might be a fitting substitute. Known for launching the alt hip-hop label Stones Throw, which helped propel the careers of J Dilla, Aloe Blacc, Mayer Hawthorne, Madlib, MED, and a slew of other stars, Wolf neatly straddles the roles of artist, curator, and tastemaker. He's also an electrifying DJ, having come up in an era when the art of fading one record into another record was, indeed, an art: Videos on YouTube show Wolf nimbly manhandling a set of turntables, syncing music to video, and creating a fast-paced DVD montage for a 2008 Stones Throw release party. (The occasion: a new compilation of music videos from Stones Throw hip-hop artists.) Expect no shoegazers at this week's showcase, which features Stones Throw artists Dam Funk, Jonti, and Jon Wayne, as well as a full bevy of local DJ royalty: Motion Potion, Sake One, Ivan, TD Camp, Miquel, Shortkut, Apollo, Mind Motion, Dials, host Fran Boogie, and Hiero rappers Souls of Mischief.  At 1015 Folsom (1015 Folsom St., San Francisco) on Friday, Apr. 20. 10 p.m., $15.
