Local favorites Stompy Jones recreate the swing and jive sounds that gave birth to rock 'n' roll in the late '40s and early '50s. Using Louis Jordan as their template, the cats in Stompy Jones lay down a deep, nonstop groove that can splinter a dance floor and leave bobby-soxers drenched with sweat. They recreate the frantic drive, freewheeling musicality, and buoyant optimism of a bygone era with uncommon panache, and vocalist Chris Binning adds plenty of soulful charisma to the mix. Their regular Tuesday night stomps in San Francisco have been going strong for years and their gigs are famous for their constant energy. Stompy Jones plays their jumpin' at Ashkenaz (1317 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley) on Friday, Mar. 13. 9:30 p.m., $13. Ashkenaz.com.
