Still Walking

Rated NR 2009

Subdued and affecting Japanese character study sits on Ozu-like tatami mats with the offspring of a small-town doctor and his wife, as they preside over a family memorial gathering in honor of their late number-one son. Writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda (Nobody Knows, After Life) teases years of resentment and anguish out of his characters in dialogue, especially from the second son (played by Hiroshi Abe) and his wife (Yui Natsukawa), and You, the neglectful mother from Nobody Knows, plays the doctor’s ditzy-but-perceptive daughter. Gentle manners mask turbulent emotions (114 min.).
